In a video entitled “GM’s Private Jets” Zamatoelite admonished us to “have fun researching, gots.” The video is gone, but the admittedly homophobic sentiment still remains: apparently, private jets are economically efficient and labor unions are to blame for the ills of the American auto sector. Forget about poor design, horrendous fuel efficiency, pollution, rising healthcare costs, and a superior Japanese auto industry. Nope, its just those union commies.

Yeah, I LOLd, too. An hour or two here and there doesn’t make up for the millions of dollars invested in private jet fleets. Plus, if we (and by “we” I mean top execs) all ditched private jets and embraced commercial flights, everybody would benefit from the less congested airways and a healthier airline industry. And its not simply the money that irks many of us; private jets magnify air pollution. Not a smart move for automakers trying to make themselves look green.

Unions are the problem? What about the extravagant and unjustified CEO pay packages? Zamato must not have received the memo: there’s naught but a loose correlation between executive pay and the performance of their corporations. Top brass rake in hundreds of times the amount that their workers do; and to be frank, CEOs nowadays suck at their jobs. (Not you Jack Welch, or you Steve Jobs) If any one party is responsible for driving this industry into a ditch, its them.

But nobody blames only one party, right? Right? (nudges Zam) I mean, that would be downright naïve. A whole slew of factors go into the fall of a major industry, not the least of which is our health insurance system. A significant portion of a unionized autoworker’s wage is healthcare benefits, a portion which could be avoided if both the unions and the corporations had spent the past few years lobbying for nationalized healthcare instead of lax fuel regulations and subsidized oil. *Sigh*

One last thing: all this union bashing makes Zam look more like a socialist than me. And thats saying something. In a free market (key word: free) workers have a right to organize and bargain for higher pay. Funny how the corporations love to complain to the government–of all places–to pass legislation inhibiting workers’ rights. Yet another classic case of socialism for the rich, “free markets” for the poor.

Gay or not, Zammy boy, Ive done more research than you ever will.

For reading on CEO compensation, look no further than Lucian Bebchuk and Jesse Fried’s meticulously researched “Pay without Performance: The Unfulfilled Promise of Executive Compensation,” published by Harvard in 2004.

Despite his ardent critics, Nobel Prize recipient Paul Krugman’s is a crucial voice on inequality in today’s globalized economy. Read his October 2002 column for New York Times entitled “For Richer” for a still-prescient take on the dangers of runaway income inequality. I said in my video that top execs make about 250 times the amount that ordinary workers do. Krugman disagrees: he put it at more than 1000 times the pay of the average American. My bad.
