AA car breakdown was top for customer satisfaction.

The AA is top of the Which? annual breakdown services customer satisfaction league, published today.

The company scored 84%, beating Britannia Rescue and the RAC, which both achieved 82%.

Considering other factors, such as speed of arrival and car repairs, the AA was top overall with 78%.

The RAC came second, with 73% and Britannia was third, on 70%.

Our breakdown services survey is the largest and most robust in the UK.

We used information from 10,772 Which? members who’d experienced a car breakdown in the previous 12 months.

The AA reached 45% of breakdowns within half-an-hour compared with the RAC figure of 41%, while Britannia scored highest for politeness over the phone.

Of the eight companies surveyed, Europ Assistance had the poorest overall score - at 50%.

Green Flag members were less likely than average to get a repair at the roadside.

Which? Car editor Richard Headland said: ‘After shelling out more than £100 for cover in some cases, it’s reasonable to expect to be back on the road sooner rather than later. The AA is unlikely to keep you hanging around on the hard shoulder, but some aspects of Green Flag’s service need patching up.’

These were the overall scores:

1. AA 78%
2. RAC 73%
3. Britannia 70%
4. Direct Line 69%
5. Mondial 62%
6. Green Flag 59%
7. More Than 55%
8. Europ Assistance 50%

When you join the AA car recovery you are paying for piece of mind. That is all any insurance is really. Hopefully you will never need to make a call at 02:00 am saying that your car has broken down in the middle of no where. If that situation had occured you can do no better than be with the AA.

I have used their car recovery service quite a few times from a leaky fuel line to locking my keys in the car (which they got out with no damage to the vehicle!). The people they employ are of a very high standard and their knowledge seems very good. They will always have a crack at fixing the issue before they try to take you to a garage. They have also been known to call various garages in the area to try and find the best quote. That is really good service.

I decided to get myself some car recovery deal after my Astra broke down for the third time that month (dodgy battery). I went about the task of comparing The AA and RAC, not easy I’m afraid, I asked work colleagues, looked on ciao and dooyoo and eventually choose The AA as it saved me £1.90 a month in comparison to the RAC.

I’ve had to call out The AA 6 or 7 times since I have been a member, every time but once they have fixed the issue at roadside. Once changed my tyre and the rest was kick starting my duff battery. The one time it couldn’t get fixed at roadside they towed me to my brother in laws garage. It is worth noting that you don’t pay anything extra whether they have fixed the car at the side of the road or just towed you.

When you breakdown you just call the car recovery number printed on your credit card style membership card and quote your member number which is printed on the front of it. Tell them your location and they call someone out. The length of time they get to you depends on a few factors, time of day, location of patrol vehicle etc…I have never waited any longer than 1 hour. The person on the other end of the phone has always been friendly, helpful and try there best to keep you calm. The car recovery patrol has always been polite and eager to help, offering advice and always informing you of there progress.
    Overall

Excellent value for money I believe, when you think how much it would cost you just for a tow somewhere (£80+). If you have an older car, not great with car’s in general or just want peace of mind then I couldn’t recommend this anymore. Some people will see car cover as pointless, however they wouldn’t be saying that if they just had to fork out for a hefty repair bill and tow at the side of the road.
